Lumbar Spinal Fusion
Lumbar spinal fusion is a common technique used to treat patients with back pain when other methods have failed. There are many different approaches to this procedure. It can be performed through an incision in the back, the abdomen, or both.
During the fusion, Dr. Ferachi removes the intervertebral disc and places either a bone graft, a metal or plastic cage, or a combination of both in its place. The appropriate procedure is determined for each patient individually. Spinal fusion is very effective in the properly selected patient.
Minimally Invasive Lumbar Fusion Through the Abdomen
This approach uses four small incisions of around half an inch in length. A fiber optic camera guides Dr. Ferachi during the procedure. Fusion with screws and rods is then performed through the back using several one-to-two inch incisions, where increasingly larger hollow tubes are inserted through the incision to spread muscles apart rather than cutting through them.
